ART IN THE CITY - LISBON

We want to celebrate art around the world by asking our MUNTHE muses what art means to them and how it is reflected in the city they live in. That’s why we have started a new monthly concept on our social media platforms called ‘Art in the City’.

I n this month’s edition, our Portuguese muse Inês Isaias, takes us through her favourite art galleries and museums in her city, Lisbon.

What are your favourite art spots in Lisbon and why?

For me every place is very magical. I chose the Glubenkian museum because there’s a brutalism architecture, and it has a beautiful garden where I feel safe and inspired. I also chose the Undercover shop because it has the best magazines, and the ones I love. The Eritage because they are a very cool gallery that selects great artists, some unknown others well-known and, they do amazing workshops with wine and gastronomy, so it’s a place to be. And MAAT because it’s one of the best museums in Lisbon that has great artists with great exhibitions. It’s amazing to spend the last hours of the day there, because of the view between the majestic bridge, and the sunset is always breathtaking.

What is your favourite piece of art in Lisbon?

So, my favorite piece of art is the one in the Eritage gallery from Peu. It’s an amazing canvas that uses a mix of paint with tissues and some organic textures from other materials, that represents people painted from above.

I really love this piece of art because it represents the meaning of society for me. When I look at this art piece, I feel that I am looking out from the balcony of my house, and all the diversity and chaos that exists in the streets is reduced to small beings who share a common life, that have no differences. We all belong to the same community, but on the other hand we are all different and I asked myself, where do they go? Where do they come from? Who are they?

Overall, it’s very satisfying when you look at some piece of art and you ask questions to yourself and recognize the power of a painting, which, without a word, can translate big questions that we have in society and inside us about the way that this world works. In the end, it’s good to think about the meaning of things and the values that they hold.
