ART IN THE CITY - MADRID

We want to celebrate art around the world by asking our MUNTHE muses what art means to them and how it is reflected in the city they live in. That’s why we have started a new monthly concept on our social media platforms called ‘Art in the City’.

I n this month’s edition, our Spanish muse Noelia Blas, takes us through her favourite art galleries and museums in her city, Madrid.

What are your favorite art spots in Madrid and why?

Madrid is a very rich city when it comes to art. Therefore, it’s always challenging for me to pick my favorite spots. I guess I’ll show you some of my most visited places in town, but truth to be told, the list always changes with the seasons.

Taschen store is in the heart of the city and it’s a complete must if you are any kind ofdesign enthusiast. The store has a really great collection of some of the mostmemorable Taschen books and beautiful interiors.

Albarrán Bourdais is a little gallery close by that has great commissioned artists. It’salways nice to have a look and grab a coffee and a cinnamon bun in Acid shopafterwards.

Fundación Juan March is not so well known in Madrid but to me is one of the most special spaces. It’s surrounded by beautiful architecture in the Salamanca district and its garden features beautiful sculptures from Chillida, among others. It’s the perfect spot to sketch or read on a Sunday morning.

This list also includes Palacio de Velázquez, inside the ever-beautiful Retiro Park. They usually host really interesting exhibitions of modern art and it’s stunning to see the contrast between the classic architecture of the palace and the contemporary pieces all around.

Thyssen museum is one of the three big museums of Madrid, with El Prado and Reina Sofia. I always try to visit it at least once a year and wander around some of my favorite pieces from Hopper. This time around they are hosting an exhibition about Rosario de Velasco, one of the biggest female Spanish artists from the beginning of the 20th century.
