MUNTHE ART MONDAY:
SYLVIE KETTLE

Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.

Through life, I’ve been gifted with a very rich internal and external experience. From this, I’ve developed a symbolic vocabulary that seems to be a bottomless spring within, a kind of archetypal language. The combination of these two things allows me to express myself across multiple artistic mediums, including painting, writing, and jewellery making.

Can you name some other female (artist) that inspires you and explain why they do so?

Agnes Martin. I often revisit her poetry as insight to the mind behind her artistic genius. She is poetic, philosophical, mystical and somehow with all that still incredibly direct.

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a woman in the arts?

I often took advice from male friends and business owners that would inspire me but it never really quite fit; it took me a while to understand that the way I operate and express my career is fundamentally different. It has been a beautiful gift to trust the way of my own instinct.

Could you explain more about how being a woman has affected your career?

The way I relate to the world is inherently feminine, I’m very sensitive to my surroundings and will find resonance inside my body with things that inspire me. I paint from that position of internal resonance.

What would you like people to notice in your artwork?

Themselves.
