ALICE DELABRIERE

Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.

I’m Alice Delabriere, i’m mostly an oil painter and mural artist, but I also do cinema, which was my first passion, and what I’ve studied after school. Painting took over a few years ago when life got hard, and it came up being the only thing that would heal me. Now I like to mix all kind of arts and whatever I feel like is good for me at the moment.

Can you name some other female (artist) that inspires you and explain why they do so?

I've always been inspired by the mexican artist Frida Kahlo of course, cause of how she kept creating no matter how ill and hurt she was physically and mentally. She never gave up on herself and what she stood for.

I’m thinking a lot of Angelia Jolie as well, I love how she is able to be playing and even directing one of the best films ever, and at the same time helping and standing for the right causes in today’s world and war.

Same goes for Greta Thunberg and many more women who to me are doing even more above art.

What would you like people to notice in your artwork?

Most of my artworks have many meanings behind them, lots of emotions I've felt too deeply, too hardly, and in a way i’m able to heal from them a lot better if I can make something out of it.

The best compliments I've had on my artwork is that people feel touched, like they’re able to understand themselves better. And that’s what I like the most, being able to put my emotions in a painting, in a writing, and some people will be able to feel them as well when it’s finished.

Could you explain more about how being a woman has affected your career?

I would definitely have a more important artistic career if I wasn't a woman who’s been struggling with mental health a lot in the past. When you’re both a woman and also have dealt with mental issues, then in today’s world you're kinda immediately seen as a “weakness” and of course that affects an artistic career a lot.

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a woman in the arts?

Being seen and heard as an artist and not only as a woman in a woman's body. Nowadays I feel people like to look at the artist more than their art. Why does it care so much how does one painter looks? As a woman I sometimes believe everyone cares more about my look and body more than they care about what I do in arts.
